A cadaveric study was performed to investigate the relationship between disc degeneration and morphological changes in the intervertebral foramen of cervical spine, including the effect on the nerve root. Seven fresh frozen human cadavers were dissected from C1 to T1, preserving the ligaments, capsules, intervertebral disc and the neural structures. The specimens were scanned with MRI and then scanned through CT scan in the upright position. Direct mid-sagittal and 45 degree oblique ...

Ankle Arthrodesis Outcomes in Ankle Osteoarthritis: Comparison between Anterior Approach and Transfibular Approach
[ PUBLICATION ]
The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical and radiologic results of arthrodesis between anterior approach and transfibular approach arthrodesis in ankle arthritis. There were 61 cases of ankle arthritis treated by anterior or transfibular ankle arthrodesis in our hospital from April 2008 to March 2012. We investigated 29 cases (27 patients) who underwent ankle arthrodesis with an anterior approach (15 cases) and transfibular approach (14 cases), and were followed for over two ...

Orientia tsutsugamushi induces vasculitis leading to symptoms of systemic organ invasion including meningitis and meningoencephalitis. We conducted a retrospective case-control study of scrub typhus patients to investigate the clinical and laboratory features of patients with scrub typhus meningitis or meningoencephalitis, and the therapeutic outcomes, and to determine the predictor factors. Cases were 22 patients with scrub typhus meningitis or meningoencephalitis, and controls were 303 ...

Expression of cancer stem cell marker during 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide-induced rat tongue carcinogenesis
[ PUBLICATION ]
One of the theories regarding oral carcinogenesis is that the tumor growth is initiated from cancer stem cells (CSCs) that self-renew and give rise to differentiated tumor cells, like stem cells do in normal tissues. The most common methods of CSC identification are based on CSC marker expression in carcinogenesis. This study examined the expression of CD133 and CD44, the most commonly used CSC biomarkers in oral squamous cell sarcoma (SCC), with the goal of identifying molecular ...

Vibrio vulnificus is a halophilic gram-negative bacillus isolated in seawater, fish, and shellfish. Infection by V. vulnificus is the most severe food-borne infection reported in the United States of America. Here, we aimed to examine the clinical usefulness of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using tissue specimens other than blood samples as a diagnostic tool for V. vulnificus infection. A retrospective study was conducted with patients who underwent real-time PCR of toxR in both blood ...

Treatment of the Posterior Malleolar Fragment of Trimalleolar Fracture Using Posterolateral Approach - Preliminary Report -
[ PUBLICATION ]
We wanted to evaluate the effectiveness of posterolateral approach for open reduction and internal fixation of posterior malleolar fragment with trimalleolar fracture of ankle joint. There were 27 cases of trimalleolar fracture in our hospital from Jan. 2005 to Dec. 2007. We investigated 10 patients who underwent operation with the posterolateral approach. The mean follow up period was 20 (6-36) months. Preoperative posterior malleolar fragment involved above 25% of articular surface in ...

Treatment of High-energy Distal Tibia Intraarticular Fractures with Two-staged Delayed Minimal Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis
[ PUBLICATION ]
To evaluate the short-term results of two-staged delayed minimal invasive plate osteosynthesis in high-energy intraarticular fractures of the distal tibia. Thirteen patients, who underwent two-staged delayed minimal invasive plate osteosynthesis for intraarticular fractures of the distal tibia between January 2002 and July 2004, were followed for more than one year. The mean interval time between first stage and second stage of the procedures was 28.6 days (range, 14~34 days). By ...

Rapid Prototyping and Reverse Engineering Application for Orthopedic Surgery Planning
[ PUBLICATION ]
This paper describes rapid prototyping (RP) and reverse engineering (RE) application for orthopedic surgery planning to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the orthopedic surgery. Using the symmetrical characteristics of the human body, CAD data of undamaged bone of the injured area are generated from a mirror transformation of undamaged bone data for the uninjured area. The physical model before the injury is manufactured from Polyjet RP process. The surgical plan, including the ...

Serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) was evaluated in Vibrio vulnificus-infected patients at admission. The median TNF-α concentration in the non-survivor group was determined to be 261.0 pg/mL, in contrast to 69.5 pg/mL in the survivor group (P = 0.001). Hence, serum TNF-α concentration may potentially be an early predictor of the mortality in patients with Vibrio septicemia.

Result of Staged Operation in Ruedi-Allgower Type II and III Open Tibia Pilon Fractures with Severe Comminution
[ PUBLICATION ]
This study analyzed the clinical and radiological results of Reudi-Allgower type II and III open tibia pilon fracture patients who underwent plate fixation after the recovery of a soft tissue injury after external fixation. From 2010 to 2015, this study analyzed 14 patients who were treated for open tibial pilon fractures and could be followed up at least one year. The mean age was 49 years and the average follow-up period was 19 months. An emergency operation was performed for external ...

The Neuroprotective Effect of Combination Therapy of Polyethylene Glycol and Magnesium Sulfate in Acute Spinal Cord Injury
[ PUBLICATION ]
To evaluate the neuroprotective effect of combination therapy of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) after a spinal cord injury. Twenty Sprague Dawley male rats (300-350 gm) had a spinal cord injury after T9/10 laminectomy using an Ohio State University (OSU) impactor under intraperitoneal anesthesia. The animals were randomized to receive either PEG (1 g/kg)+MgSO4 (300 mg/kg) or saline (2 ml) via carotid vein after 2 hours of injury and then every 6 hours for 5 ...

Treatment of Senile Osteoporotic Intertrochanteric Fracture using Proximal Femoral Nail
[ PUBLICATION ]
Clinical and radiologic results of femur intertrochanteric fractures treated with ITST nail in elderly patients with osteoporosis were analysized to evaluate the efficacy and complication of ITST nailing. 32 patients who were treated with ITST nail due to femur intertrochanteric fracture and were followed up for more than 1 year were analysed. According to Evans classification, 11 cases were stable fractures and 21 cases were unstable fractures. Clinically, ambulatory function was ...
