International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium report, data summary of 50 countries for 2010-2015: Device-associated module
[ PUBLICATION ]
BACKGROUND: We report the results of International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) surveillance study from January 2010-December 2015 in 703 intensive care units (ICUs) in Latin America, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and Western Pacific.
METHODS: During the 6-year study period, using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Healthcare Safety Network (CDC-NHSN) definitions for device-associated health care-associated infection (DA-HAI), we ...

Intubation Practices and Adverse Peri-intubation Events in Critically Ill Patients From 29 Countries
[ PUBLICATION ]
Importance: Tracheal intubation is one of the most commonly performed and high-risk interventions in critically ill patients. Limited information is available on adverse peri-intubation events.
Objective: To evaluate the incidence and nature of adverse peri-intubation events and to assess current practice of intubation in critically ill patients.
Design, Setting, and Participants: The International Observational Study to Understand the Impact and Best Practices of Airway Management in ...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the use of decision aids for hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) regarding the potential risks and benefits of different treatment options.
METHODS: A prospective, randomized controlled trial was conducted of 147 patients with advanced hip or knee OA to compare the effect of two decision aids (booklet-only vs. booklet with DVD).
RESULTS: Both decision aid programs were well received and demonstrated improvements in patient knowledge and willingness to participate in ...

A Proposed Rapid Visual Screening Procedure for Seismic Evaluation of RC-Frame Buildings in India
[ PUBLICATION ]
Poor performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings in India during past earthquakes has been a matter of serious concern. Hence, it becomes important to identify and strengthen the deficient buildings. When dealing with a large building stock, one needs evaluation methods for quick assessment of the seismic safety of existing buildings so that corrective retrofitting measures may be undertaken on the deficient buildings. This paper presents a review of some of the available ...

BACKGROUND: Cardiac myxomas are the most common benign intracardiac tumors. We studied the clinical presentation of cardiac myxomas, their morbidity, mortality and recurrence rate following surgery at our institution over a period of four years.
METHODS: During August 2008 to November 2012, a total of 12023 cardiac surgeries were performed. Amongst these, 50 patients (12 males, 38 females) underwent complete removal of primary or recurrent intracardiac myxomas. Complete tumor excision ...

Popper is well known for rejecting a logic of discovery, but he is only justified in rejecting the same type of logic of discovery that is denied by consequentialism. His own account of hypothesis generation, based on a natural selection analogy, involves an error-eliminative logic of discovery and the differences he admits between biological and conceptual evolution suggest an error-corrective logic of discovery. These types of logics of discovery are based on principles of plausibility ...

Management of acute atrial fibrillation in the intensive care unit: An international survey
[ PUBLICATION ]
BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is common in intensive care unit (ICU) patients and is associated with poor outcomes. Different management strategies exist, but the evidence is limited and derived from non-ICU patients. This international survey of ICU doctors evaluated the preferred management of acute AF in ICU patients.
METHOD: We conducted an international online survey of ICU doctors with 27 questions about the preferred management of acute AF in the ICU, including ...

The relative stability of three-, four-, five- and six-atom s-valent clusters has been investigated within a nearest-neighbour tight-binding Hückel model. The predicted structural trends as a function of electron count are related directly to the cluster topology by using the ring approximation to the bond order. The importance of cluster connectivity rather than symmetry is stressed.

Assessment of Renal Growth and Function in Preterm Infants at Corrected Age of 12–18 Month
[ PUBLICATION ]
Objective: To assess the kidney growth and function in appropriate for date and small for date (SGA) preterm neonates. Methods: Appropriate for date and SGA preterm neonates with gestation <35 weeks, at 12–18 months of corrected age, attending the follow-up outpatient clinic of a Tertiary care level III neonatal unit. Renal function was assessed by measuring the serum creatinine level and estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) was calculated by using modified Schwartz formula. Kidney ...
