BackgroundComparative effectiveness (CE) research allows real-world treatment comparisons using outcome measurements important to physicians/patients. This German NeuroTransData registry-based analysis compared delayed-release dimethyl fumarate (DMF) effectiveness with interferons (IFN), glatiramer acetate (GA), teriflunomide (TERI), or fingolimod (FTY) in patients with relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) using propensity score matching (PSM).MethodsData from registry patients ...

Concentrations of tropospheric ozone often exceed Australian air quality goals in Sydney during summer. However, features in the occurrence of ozone in Sydney are yet to be fully explained. Meteorological conditions associated with ozone episodes in Sydney are caused by complex interactions between synoptic and meso-scale processes. This paper discusses the meteorological influences behind ozone pollution episodes in Sydney. A synoptic climatology of ozone episodes in Sydney was ...

Comparative efficacy of first-line natalizumab vs IFN-&bgr or glatiramer acetate in relapsing MS
[ PUBLICATION ]
BACKGROUND: We compared efficacy and treatment persistence in treatment-naive patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) initiating natalizumab compared with interferon-β (IFN-β)/glatiramer acetate (GA) therapies, using propensity score-matched cohorts from observational multiple sclerosis registries.
METHODS: The study population initiated IFN-β/GA in the MSBase Registry or natalizumab in the Tysabri Observational Program, had ≥3 months of on-treatment follow-up, and ...

Charting a global research strategy for progressive MS—An international progressive MS Alliance proposal
[ PUBLICATION ]
BACKGROUND: Progressive forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) affect more than 1 million individuals globally. Recent approvals of ocrelizumab for primary progressive MS and siponimod for active secondary progressive MS have opened the therapeutic door, though results from early trials of neuroprotective agents have been mixed. The recent introduction of the term 'active' secondary progressive MS into the therapeutic lexicon has introduced potential confusion to disease description and ...

The burden of complications associated with peripheral intravenous use is underevaluated, in part, due to the broad use, inconsistent coding, and lack of mandatory reporting of these devices. This study aimed to analyze the clinical and economic impact of peripheral intravenous-related complications on hospitalized patients. This analysis of Premier Perspective® Database US hospital discharge records included admissions occurring between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2015 for pneumonia, ...

Spheroidal and nanocrystal structures created from carbodiimide crosslinking reaction with RADA16
[ PUBLICATION ]
RADA16 is a widely studied polypeptide known for its ability to self-assemble into β-sheets that form nanofibers. Here we show that it is possible to self-crosslink the molecule via 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) as aqueous solutions. The product results in a mix of nanocrystals and near micron-size spherules. SEM and TEM pictures provide a view of the structures and nano tracking analysis gives their size distributions. FTIR analysis provides evidence ...
Since the Vermont State Hospital was approaching a major transition period, it was decided to study systematically the effects of intra-unit and inter-unit transfer on its psychogeriatric patients. Ten patients were assessed by means of four standardized measures in the intra-unit study, specifically investigating the effects of integrating wards previously devoted either to chronic or to acute psychiatric illness. Twenty-five patients from a specialized geriatric unit were evaluated, by ...

Exploration Versus Extraction Costs as Determinants of Optimal Mineral‐Rights Leases*
[ PUBLICATION ]
Leasing agreements concerning the exploitation of mineral deposits on government lands are analyzed with a special emphasis on the distinction between exploration and extraction activities. Results include a demonstration that the conditions for the optimal sharing of exploration costs are closely related to the conditions for the optimal pricing of public goods. Other results include a demonstration of how the sharing of exploration costs relative to the sharing of production costs is ...

With funding from the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering, the University of Edinburgh has developed a set of three truly interdisciplinary group design exercises aimed at improving penultimateyear undergraduate students’ ability to work across disciplines and improve their preparation for transfer into industry. Three exercises on hydropower system design, potable water supply and a microsystem accelerometer are each designed and led by a Visiting Industrial Professor. The group design ...
