BACKGROUND: Mastocytosis is a disorder characterized by the accumulation of mast cells in various organs, most commonly in the skin. Cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) can be classified as nodular CM with solitary or multiple lesions, diffuse CM (erythroderma), and maculopapular CM including the papular/plaque variant, urticaria pigmentosa (UP) and telangiectasia macularis eruptiva perstans (TMEP).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the dermatoscopic features of cutaneous mastocytosis.
METHODS: We reviewed ...

Extracorporeal photoimmunotherapy for the treatment of steroid refractory progressive chronic graft-versus-host disease
[ PUBLICATION ]
BACKGROUND: Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) can arise frequently as a late complication after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. Patients with extensive disease to date require intensive and long-term immuno-suppression. We aimed to share our single center experience using extracorporeal photoimmunotherapy (ECP) in our steroid refractory extensive cGVHD patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight patients with a median age 42 (range, 17-43) and M/F: 2/6 were treated with ...

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) is a rare subepidermal bullous disease. Long-term remission in this disease is difficult using current treatments, unlike that in patients with other autoimmune bullous diseases.
OBJECTIVE: We retrospectively evaluated the effectiveness and side effects of rituximab-intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) combination treatment in five patients with EBA resistant to conventional treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Rituximab (375 mg/m2) was ...

Vitiligo after Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation: Six Cases and Review of the Literature
[ PUBLICATION ]
AIM: To investigate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of vitiligo after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (AHCT).
METHODS: The development of vitiligo was analyzed among 421 patients who underwent AHCT in Ibni Sina Hospital (University of Ankara) between 1988 and 2004.
RESULTS: Among 421 patients, we describe 6 with generalized vitiligo occurring after AHCT for chronic myelogenous leukemia. Five of them had severe chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Vitiligo ...

Black Hairy Tongue After Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation: An Unrecognized Cutaneous Presentation of Graft-Versus-Host Disease
[ PUBLICATION ]
Black hairy tongue (BHT) is an unusual condition in adults characterized by marked accumulation of keratin on the dorsum of the tongue, resulting in a hair-like appearance. Herein, we have described 15 patients developing BHT after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT). BHT was generally accompanied by other cutaneous manifestations of cutaneous graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) or a precursor of GVHD. Our experience in this series emphasized that histopathologic evaluation is ...

An Unusual Cause of Oligoarthritis and Erythema Nodosum: Idiopathic Granulomatous Mastitis
[ PUBLICATION ]
Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is an unusual benign inflammatory disease of breast. Breast cancer mimics IGM both radiologically and clinically. However, IGM is a benign disease and awareness of such an entity prevents unnecessary surgical procedures. Although its etiology is unknown, it may be an autoimmune disease. There are few patients reported in the literature presenting with reactive arthritis and/or erythema nodosum accompanying IGM of breast. Granulomatous mastitis ...

Mycosis fungoides and Sezary syndrome: therapeutic approach and outcome in 113 patients
[ PUBLICATION ]
BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sezary syndrome (SS) are the most common forms of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). Various topical and systemic therapeutic alternatives are available, but there is no standard or definite curative treatment regimen. When making a decision about the appropriate treatment modality, the age and compliance of the patient, stage of the disease, treatment accessibility, and previous treatment history should be considered.
AIM: To determine the ...

Evaluation of nail involvement in patients with chronic cutaneous graft versus host disease: A single‐center study from Turkey
[ PUBLICATION ]
Although graft versus host disease (GVHD) is associated with a myriad of cutaneous signs, nail involvement is rarely mentioned in the literature. This study was conducted at the Department of Dermatology and The Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit of Hematology. All patients were examined clinically for presence of nail abnormalities. Severity of nail involvement was assessed as mild or severe. Of 28 patients diagnosed with chronic cutaneous GVHD, 14 had nail manifestations. Longitudinal ...

Nailfold capillary abnormalities are prevalent in sclerodermoid graft‐versus‐host disease and readily detected with dermatoscopy
[ PUBLICATION ]
BACKGROUND: Well-recognized videocapillaroscopic patterns have been described in systemic sclerosis (SS). However, no studies have described the capillary abnormalities of sclerodermoid chronic graft-versus-host disease (Scl GVHD) developed after allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT).
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to find the characteristics of nailfold capillary changes in Scl GVHD after allo-HSCT.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients affected by ...

Granuloma annulare on herpes zoster scars in a Hodgkin's disease patient following autologous peripheral stem cell transplantation
[ PUBLICATION ]
Various cutaneous lesions including granulomatous reactions may occur at sites of resolved herpes zoster infection. A 46-year-old man with Hodgkin's disease developed localized granuloma annulare lesions on herpes zoster scars 3 months after allogeneic peripheral stem cell transplantation. This is the first case of granuloma annulare localized on herpes zoster scars that developed following peripheral stem cell transplantation.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for refractory mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sezary syndrome (SS)
[ PUBLICATION ]
Cutaneous T cell lymphoma is a heterogeneous group of lymphoproliferative disorders with different clinical behavior and prognosis in which malignant T cells accumulate in the skin. In the relapsed/refractory stage, treatment strategy varies depending on clinical perspective. We retrospectively evaluated advanced stage relapse or refractory mycosis fungoides and Sezary syndrome patients who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) at our hospital. The ...

Remission of severe autoimmune bullous disorders induced by long-term extracorporeal photochemotherapy
[ PUBLICATION ]
Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) sometimes resist treatments. In drug-resistant cases, adjuvant treatment with extracorporeal photochemotherapy (ECP) has been reported to induce remission. However, limited numbers of patients have been reported up to date. Eleven patients with drug-resistant autoimmune bullous diseases have been treated with ECP (8 patients with PV, 3 patients with EBA). The introduction of ECP to systemic therapies of the patients with ...
