INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and incontinence (nocturnal enuresis (NE), daytime urinary incontinence (DUI), fecal incontinence (FI)) are relevant disorders in childhood. In general, children with special needs such as intellectual disability (ID) or ASD are more often affected by incontinence than typically developing children.
OBJECTIVE: In the few studies conducted on children with ASD, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms have received more attention than NE, DUI and lower ...

Prevalence of incontinence, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder in preschool children
[ PUBLICATION ]
Externalizing disorders as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) are common in children with nocturnal enuresis (NE), daytime urinary incontinence (DUI) and faecal incontinence (FI). We examined the prevalence rates of ADHD, ODD and incontinence in a defined geographical area and analysed the association between externalizing disorders and subtypes of incontinence. 1,676 parents of children who were presented at the mandatory school-entry ...

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and incontinence (nocturnal enuresis, daytime urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence) are common disorders in childhood. Both disorders are strongly associated with each other.
OBJECTIVE: ADHD can affect compliance to incontinence therapy in a negative way; it can also affect outcome. The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of incontinence, age of bladder and bowel control, and psychological symptoms in ...

Family History of Nocturnal Enuresis and Urinary Incontinence: Results From a Large Epidemiological Study
[ PUBLICATION ]
PURPOSE: Nocturnal enuresis is a common, genetically heterogeneous disorder. Family, twin and segregation analyses have demonstrated a high heritability. Molecular genetic linkage studies have identified several loci on different chromosomes. Much less is known about the genetics of daytime urinary incontinence. In this study we identify familial patterns in a large, representative sample of children with nocturnal enuresis and daytime urinary incontinence.

AIMS: Williams Syndrome (WS) is a microdeletion syndrome (chromosome 7q11.23) characterized by typical facial features, cardiovascular disease, behavioural symptoms, and mild intellectual disability (ID). The aim of this study was to assess the rates of incontinence and psychological problems in persons with WS.
METHODS: 231 individuals with WS were recruited through the German parent support group (52.0% male, mean age 19.4 years). Faecal incontinence (FI) was diagnosed from the age of ...

The aim of this study was to assess rates for tic disorders and obsessive compulsive psychopathology in families of children and adolescents with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS). Diagnoses were based on the DSM III-R criteria. Obsessive compulsive psychopathology, that did not fulfill the criteria for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) was additionally assessed and termed obsessive compulsive symptoms (OCS). The authors hypothesized that comorbid OCD or OCS in TS patients predicts a ...

OBJECTIVE: This population-based study investigated the psychological problems associated with daytime wetting in children.
METHODS: A sample of 8213 children (age range: 7 years 6 months to 9 years 3 months) who were enrolled in the population-based Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children participated in this study. Parents completed a postal questionnaire asking about their children's toileting behavior and assessing psychological problems, including childhood emotional and ...

PURPOSE: Lower urinary tract symptoms are common in pediatric patients. To our knowledge no validated instruments properly designed to screen lower urinary tract symptoms in the pediatric population have been published to date. In the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Committee the psychometric properties of a screening questionnaire for pediatric lower urinary tract symptoms were assessed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 12-item International Consultation on ...

Quality of Life and Self-Esteem for Children With Urinary Urge Incontinence and Voiding Postponement
[ PUBLICATION ]
PURPOSE: Urge incontinence and voiding postponement are common subtypes of daytime wetting in children. We analyzed health related quality of life for children with urge incontinence and voiding postponement, and healthy controls at 2 centers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined a total of 49 consecutive children 5 to 13 years old who presented with urge incontinence (22) or voiding postponement (27), and 32 controls matched for age and sex. Health related and overall quality of life were ...

In individuals with autism or autism-spectrum-disorder (ASD), conflicting results have been reported regarding the processing of biological motion tasks. As biological motion perception and recognition might be related to impaired imitation, gross motor skills and autism specific psychopathology in individuals with ASD, we performed a functional MRI study on biological motion perception in a sample of 15 adolescent and young adult individuals with ASD and typically developing, age, sex ...

OBJECTIVE; To analyse prospectively the incidence of behavioural disorders and the subjective views of children with urge incontinence (defined by detrusor instability, sudden urge symptoms and frequent micturitions) and voiding postponement (characterized by delayed micturition in typical situations and a low voiding frequency) according to an identical protocol in a paediatric and a child psychiatric unit.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Ninety-four consecutive or randomly selected children aged ...

Adenosine A2A receptor gene (ADORA2A) variants may increase autistic symptoms and anxiety in autism spectrum disorder
[ PUBLICATION ]
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are heterogeneous disorders presenting with increased rates of anxiety. The adenosine A2A receptor gene (ADORA2A) is associated with panic disorder and is located on chromosome 22q11.23. Its gene product, the adenosine A2A receptor, is strongly expressed in the caudate nucleus, which also is involved in ASD. As autistic symptoms are increased in individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, and large 22q11.2 deletions and duplications have been observed in ...

ADHD and incontinence are common childhood disorders which co-occur at much higher rates than expected by chance. The aim of this review was to provide an overview both of the comorbidity of nocturnal enuresis (NE), daytime urinary incontinence (DUI) and faecal incontinence (FI) in children with ADHD; and, vice versa, of the co-occurrence of ADHD in children with NE, DUI and FI. Most clinical studies have focussed on the association of ADHD and NE. Population-based studies have shown ...

Parental ADHD may be a significant barrier to a successful treatment for the child’s ADHD. The objective of our randomized controlled trial was to evaluate whether the treatment for maternal ADHD improves the efficacy of a behavioural parent training for children’s ADHD. Patient enrolment and a description of the full analysis set (FAS) of mother–child pairs with non-missing baseline data are presented. One hundred and forty-four mother–child pairs were randomized to two treatments for ...

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to analyze the prevalence of eating problems and specific associations between overweight, obesity, and eating behavior in children with incontinence.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty-three consecutively presented children with incontinence, diagnosed to International Children's Continence Society standards, and 44 matched continent controls were examined prospectively. All children received a physical examination, sonography, and a one-dimensional intelligence test. ...
