BACKGROUND: The effect of the α-glucosidase inhibitor acarbose on cardiovascular outcomes in patients with coronary heart disease and impaired glucose tolerance is unknown. We aimed to assess whether acarbose could reduce the frequency of cardiovascular events in Chinese patients with established coronary heart disease and impaired glucose tolerance, and whether the incidence of type 2 diabetes could be reduced.
METHODS: The Acarbose Cardiovascular Evaluation (ACE) trial was a ...

Kisspeptin, the product of Kiss1 gene, is a novel regulator of the gonadotropic axis. In mammals, its stimulatory effect on gonadotropin secretion is well documented and mediated mainly by hypothalamic release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Although the pituitary actions of kisspeptin have been reported, the effects of kisspeptin on gonadotropin release via direct action on pituitary cells are still controversial. Using goldfish as a model, here we examined the direct actions of ...

Genomic characterisation and epidemiology of 2019 novel coronavirus: implications for virus origins and receptor binding
[ PUBLICATION ]
BACKGROUND: In late December, 2019, patients presenting with viral pneumonia due to an unidentified microbial agent were reported in Wuhan, China. A novel coronavirus was subsequently identified as the causative pathogen, provisionally named 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). As of Jan 26, 2020, more than 2000 cases of 2019-nCoV infection have been confirmed, most of which involved people living in or visiting Wuhan, and human-to-human transmission has been confirmed.
METHODS: We did ...

CXCL12-CXCR4 Axis Promotes Proliferation, Migration, Invasion, and Metastasis of Ovarian Cancer
[ PUBLICATION ]
The CXCL12-CXCR4 chemokine axis may play a very important role in ovarian cancer cells proliferation, migration, invasion, and peritoneal metastasis in vitro and in vivo. In this study, transfected SKOV3-CXCR4, transfected vector SKOV3-negative, nontransfected SKOV3 ovarian cancer cells, and human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HPMCs) were cultivated in vitro, and the proliferation, migration, and invasion of these ovarian cancer cells were investigated with or without the influence of ...

BACKGROUND: The initial cases of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)-infected pneumonia (NCIP) occurred in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, in December 2019 and January 2020. We analyzed data on the first 425 confirmed cases in Wuhan to determine the epidemiologic characteristics of NCIP.
METHODS: We collected information on demographic characteristics, exposure history, and illness timelines of laboratory-confirmed cases of NCIP that had been reported by January 22, 2020. We described ...

According to recent studies, long non-coding RNA X-inactive specific transcript (XIST) is involved in the development and progression of many malignant tumors including pancreatic cancer. We validated the detailed role of XIST in human pancreatic cancer (PC) cell lines and PC tissues so as to determine its exact function and the mechanism by which it affected PC proliferation. In our research, lncRNA-XIST was specifically upregulated in PC tissues and cell lines, and high XIST expression ...

The highly expressed Id1 (inhibitor of DNA binding/differentiation) protein promotes angiogenesis in HCC and is a well established target for anti-angiogenesis therapeutic strategies. Heparan sulfate (HS) mimetics such as PI-88 can abrogate HS-protein interactions to inhibit angiogenesis. Id1 is the direct downstream effector of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), which are angiogenic and HS-binding proteins. Thus, targeting BMPs by HS mimetics may inhibit angiogenesis via attenuating ...

T helper17 (Th17) cells have been demonstrated to participate in the pathogenesis of hepatitis B virus (HBV) associated liver damage. However, the contribution of Th17 cells to immune activation and disease aggravation in patients with HBV infection is not fully clear. In this study, we investigated the Th17 cells frequencies and interleukin-17 (IL-17) mRNA expressions in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), intrahepatic IL-17-positive cells accumulation, as well as serum IL-17 ...

The embryonic stem cell self-renewal gene, Nanog, has been shown to be expressed in several tumor types and to regulate tumor development. The aim of this study was to carry out a detailed analysis of Nanog expression in human endometrial adenocarcinoma (EAC). Immunohistochemical analysis and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction were used to characterize Nanog, Sox2, and Oct4 expression in tissue arrays containing EAC, benign endometrium samples, and tumorosphere cells. ...

Geometric moment invariants are widely used in many fields of image analysis and pattern recognition since their first introduction by Hu in 1962. A few years ago, Flusser has proved how to find the independent and complete set of geometric moment invariants corresponding to a given order. On the other hand, the properties of orthogonal moments show that they can be recognized as useful tools for image representation and reconstruction. Therefore, derivation of invariants from orthogonal ...

Growth factors such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are widely used in the recovery of spinal cord injury (SCI) for promoting axonal regeneration or improving neuron survival. However, the lack of efficient delivery approaches limits their clinical applications. In this study, we constructed an efficient delivery system including collagen-binding BDNF and linear ordered collagen scaffolds (LOCS). A collagen-binding domain (CBD) was utilized to construct collagen-targeting ...

Prevalence and associations of epiretinal membrane in an elderly urban Chinese population in China: the Jiangning Eye Study
[ PUBLICATION ]
AIMS: To describe the prevalence and associations of epiretinal membrane (ERM) in an elderly urban Chinese population in China.
METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted using a cluster random sample of residents aged 50 years or older living in the Jiangning Road Sub-district, Shanghai, China. The effect of β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) on control of anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in mango fruit and its possible mechanisms were investigated. The results show that BABA treatments effectively suppressed the expansion of lesion in mango fruit inoculated with C. gloeosporioides during storage at 25°C, with the greatest efficacy being obtained using 100mM BABA. However, BABA at 25–400mM did not exhibit direct antifungal activity against C. gloeosporioides in ...

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative injury of the articular cartilage and reactive hyperplasia of the articular rim and subchondral bone. Due to its poor prognosis, this study is to research the influences of lncRNA HOTAIR on synovial inflammation and synoviocyte apoptosis and proliferation in OA rats by regulating the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Rat OA model was constructed by means of cruciate ligament resection, and the successfully modeled rats were injected with sh-HOTAIR, or ...
