The pharmacokinetics and therapeutic efficacy of imipenem, ceftazidime, and ceftriaxone were compared with those of ampicillin and chloramphenicol in rabbits with experimental meningitis due to an ampicillin- and chloramphenicol-resistant strain of Haemophilus influenzae type b. The mean bacterial colony counts in cerebrospinal fluid were reduced by 49% (-1.85 log10 CFU/ml), 92% (-3.37 log10 CFU/ml), and 92% (-4.30 log10 CFU/ml) after a single dose of imipenem, ceftazidime, and ...

In a study of 1000 consecutive coronary arteriograms, 12 patients (all men) had coronary artery ectasia. Ectasia was found most frequently in the circumflex or right coronary artery. Only 1 patient had ectasia in the left anterior descending coronary artery. In 11 patients, ectasia of one artery was associated with severe stenosis or occlusion of other vessels, typical of arteriosclerosis. Histology from an ectatic segment in one of this group showed changes of severe arteriosclerosis ...

One hundred patients with phlebographically proved acute deep vein thrombosis of the legs were prospectively randomised into two treatment groups to compare the safety and efficacy of subcutaneous calcium heparin versus intravenous sodium heparin administered by constant infusion pump. The dose of heparin was determined by daily measurement of the kaolin cephalin clotting time. Treatment was maintained for up to 14 days, after which phlebography was repeated. Of 49 patients who received ...

Forty patients were studied prospectively for complications of ascending phlebography. The commonest immediate complication was pain at the site of injection and the commonest delayed complication pain in the foot or calf. Out of 30 patients with pain in the foot and calf, 15 had venous thrombosis. Review of 200 case notes disclosed only one recorded complication--namely, necrosis of the dorsal skin of the foot. Complications of the procedure reported by referring clinicians over 10 ...

Thirty isolates of Haemophilus ducreyi collected in Thailand in 1984 were characterized by plasmid content. Three novel plasmids with estimated molecular masses of 1.8, 2.6, and 2.8 MDa were observed in 29 isolates, in addition to the 3.2-, 5.7-, and 7.0-MDa beta-lactamase and 4.4-MDa sulfonamide resistance plasmids. At least three of the seven plasmids were observed in each of the 29 isolates. The number and diversity of plasmids observed in these isolates of H. ducreyi distinguish them ...
