OBJECTIVE: To compare body composition, body fat distribution and insulin secretion in patients taking nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) therapy.

DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study in three French AIDS clinical centres.

PATIENTS: Forty-three HIV-infected patients on long-term NRTI therapy including stavudine (n = 27) or zidovudine (n = 16) and 15 therapy-naive HIV-infected patients (control group).

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Fat wasting was assessed by physical ...

BACKGROUND: Fat distribution abnormalities have been reported in patients treated with various antiretroviral drug regimens. The LIPOCO study is an ongoing observational study of unselected HIV-infected patients which aims to better characterize such disorders and their metabolic correlations.

METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of data collected at baseline in the first 154 male patients included. Investigators divided patients into four predetermined clinical categories of fat ...

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) incidence with HIV infection may have increased with the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), suggesting that immune reconstitution may contribute to some cases. We evaluated HL risk with cART during the first months of treatment. With 187 HL cases among 64 368 HIV patients in France, relative rates (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of HL were estimated using Poisson models for duration of cART, CD4 count, and HIV load, with and without ...

BACKGROUND: In the current context of dyslipidaema, hyperglycaema and lipodystrophia observed among HIV-seropositive subjects, it is important to study the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) in this population. The French Hospital Database on HIV, which includes a large number of seropositive subjects followed for substantial periods, offers the opportunity to analyse the impact of protease inhibitors (PI) on the risk of MI among men.

METHODS: Cox model was used to study the risk factors ...
