The diversity and changing patterns of rugose corals in the Carboniferous and Permian of South China are analysed by statistical analyses of 45 families, 284 genera, and 1979 species from 14 consecutive time intervals. The ancestors of Carboniferous rugose corals originated early and underwent preliminary radiation in the late Famennian, but were eliminated by the Hangenberg global regressive event, which marks the Devonian—Carboniferous boundary. Radiation of typical Carboniferous ...

Acute lung injury (ALI) is considered as an uncontrolled inflammatory response that can leads to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which limits the therapeutic strategies. Ginsenosides Rb1 (Rb1), an active ingredient obtained from Panax ginseng, possesses a broad range of pharmacological and medicinal properties, comprising the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-tumor activities. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the protective effects of Rb1 ...

We studied the effects of maize residue application on some life-cycle parameters of the earthworm Aporrectodea trapezoides in saline agricultural soils with electrical conductivity (EC) ranging from 1.58 to 7.35 dS m−1. This experiment was carried out under controlled laboratory conditions for 150 days. Results showed that soil salinity significantly affected the growth and reproduction of earthworms, decreasing survival, numbers and mean fresh weights of adults, juveniles and cocoons. ...

AIM OF THE STUDY: In the present study, we examined the effect of Allium tuberosum seeds extract upon the expression of male rat sexual behavior, in order to know whether Allium tuberosum seeds extract possess aphrodisiac property.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aphrodisiac activity of Allium tuberosum seeds n-BuOH extract was investigated in male rats. The extract (500 mg/kg body weight/day) and L-dopa (100 mg/kg body weight/day) were administered orally by gavages for 40 days. Mount ...

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is one of the main causative agents of foot, hand and mouth disease. Its infection usually causes severe central nervous system diseases and complications in infected infants and young children. In the present study, we demonstrated that EV71 infection caused the rearrangement of vimentin in human astrocytoma cells. The rearranged vimentin, together with various EV71 components, formed aggresomes-like structures in the perinuclear region. Electron microscopy and ...

Matrine, one of the main active components extracted from dry roots of Sophora flavescens Ait (Leguminosae), has been reported to have anticancer effects on a number of cancer cell lines, but the anticancer mechanism of matrine remains elusive. This study shows that matrine also displays anticancer activity on human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells. In this work, the optimal cultivation condition for HepG2 cells was determined using the combinatorial orthogonal test design [L18 (21 ...

Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of death worldwide, and its mechanisms are still unclear. However, various animal models have significantly advanced our understanding of the mechanisms involved in atherosclerosis and have allowed the evaluation of therapeutic options. The aim of this paper is to review those animal models (i.e., rabbits, mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, avian, carnivores, swine, and, non-human primates) that have been used to study atherosclerosis. Though there is ...

The combination of NOx gas which is stored in the pore canals of porous silica beads (PSB) with a heterogeneous catalyst, PSB-supported 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperdine 1-oxyl (PSB-TEMPO, 1), afforded a highly efficient, widely applicable, and efficiently recyclable approach for the selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols. This novel catalytic system (PSB-TEMPO/NOx) can be employed in the oxidation of a wide range of alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes and ketones with selectivities as ...

Because of unique economic, cultural, and social factors, the personal experiences of HIV/AIDS patients in the rural areas of western China are not well understood. The aim of this study was to explore HIV/AIDS patients' thoughts and personal experiences in the environment and conditions of rural western China. Sixteen HIV/AIDS patients from remote western areas of China were interviewed by using an established qualitative method, during April to June 2008. The interviews were ...

With the lidar data onboard CALIPSO satellite, the vertical distribution of aerosols when dry haze of different intensity occurred around Shanghai were revealed by analyzing optical parameters including attenuated backscatter coefficient, volume depolarization ratio and total attenuated colour ratio. The preliminary conclusion is that when dry haze occurs, the smoke and maritime aerosols are the major types of aerosols within 0–10km in troposphere around Shanghai; the lower troposphere ...

This paper discussed the interference between external electric exposure and biological objects. Based on results of space-time characteristics of trans-membrane voltage, the variation of cell trans-membrane voltage exposed to extremely low frequency (ELF) electrical field was analyzed; the traditional Hodgkin–Huxley model was modified by importing new parameter denoting external electrical fields, and the bifurcation caused by new parameter war found. Potash deposits commonly accumulate in highly restricted settings at the final stage of brine evaporation. This does not mean that potash deposits are formed simply as a result of the evaporation concentration of seawater or lake water, but rather as a coupling result of particular provenance, tectonics and climate activities. In this paper, we focus on the formative mechanism of the potash deposits of Lop Nur depression in Tarim Basin to interpret the detailed coupling mechanism among ...

As two kinds of defects, recast layers and spatters, commonly accompanied by laser-drilled holes always prevent the laser drilling technique from extending its applications in aerospace and aircraft industries, therefore, a novel hybrid process incorporating laser drilling with jet electrochemical machining (JECM-LD) has been developed to solve these problems as well as improve the overall quality of laser-drilled holes. It is executed by directing an electrolyte jet coaxially aligned ...
