New Results on the Barlow–Proschan and Natvig Measures of Component Importance in Nonrepairable and Repairable Systems
[ PUBLICATION ]
In this paper dynamic and stationary measures of importance of a component in a binary system are considered. To arrive at explicit results we assume the performance processes of the components to be independent and the system to be coherent. Especially, the Barlow–Proschan and the Natvig measures are treated in detail and a series of new results and approaches are given. For the case of components not undergoing repair it is shown that both measures are sensible. Reasonable measures of ...

A Bayesian hierarchical spatio-temporal model for significant wave height in the North Atlantic
[ PUBLICATION ]
Bad weather and rough seas continue to be a major cause for ship losses and is thus a significant contributor to the risk to maritime transportation. This stresses the importance of taking severe sea state conditions adequately into account in ship design and operation. Hence, there is a need for appropriate stochastic models describing the variability of sea states, taking into account long-term trends related to climate change. Various stochastic models of significant wave height are ...

AIMS: The objective of the study was to examine the efficacy and the degree of adverse effects connected with atypical neuroleptic drugs and haloperidol by using a previously described Bayesian statistical method that includes both direct and indirect comparisons simultaneously.
METHODS: The authors used the results of 30 double-blind, randomized studies including comparisons of 4 atypical neuroleptics and haloperidol, head-to-head or against placebo. We calculated the response ratios ...

Dynamic and stationary measures of importance of a component in a repairable multistate system are an important part of reliability. For multistate systems little has been published until now on such measures even in the nonrepairable case. According to the Barlow–Proschan type measures a component is important if there is a high probability that a change in the component state causes a change in whether or not the system state is above a given state. On the other hand, the Natvig type ...

A multiple treatment comparison meta‐analysis of monoamine oxidase type B inhibitors for Parkinson's disease
[ PUBLICATION ]
AIMS: To the best of our knowledge, there are no systematic reviews or meta-analyses that compare rasagiline, selegiline and safinamide. Therefore, we aimed to perform a drug class review comparing all available monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitors in a multiple treatment comparison.
METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search to identify randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of MAO-B inhibitors in patients with Parkinson's disease. MAO-B inhibitors were ...

Measures of Component Importance in Nonrepairable and Repairable Multistate Strongly Coherent Systems
[ PUBLICATION ]
In Natvig and Gåsemyr (Methodol Comput Appl Probab 11:603–620, 2009) dynamic and stationary measures of importance of a component in a binary system were considered. To arrive at explicit results the performance processes of the components were assumed to be independent and the system to be coherent. Especially the Barlow–Proschan and the Natvig measures were treated in detail and a series of new results and approaches were given. For the case of components not undergoing repair it was ...

Variation in torus mandibularis prevalence in Norway A statistical analysis using logistic regression
[ PUBLICATION ]
The prevalence of torus mandibularis was assessed in two groups of dental patients, altogether 2010 individuals over 10 yr of age: 1181 individuals native to the Lofoten Islands in North Norway, situated at 68 degrees latitude; and 829 patients indigenous to Gudbrandsdal, an inland district in the southeastern part of the country at 61 degrees latitude. Both groups were supposed to be of the same Caucasian stock and, therefore, to have similar genetic predisposition to torus on the ...

BACKGROUND: Inclusion of unpublished data on the effects of antidepressants on children has suggested unfavourable risk-benefit profiles for some of the drugs. Recent meta-analyses of studies on adults have indicated similar effects. We obtained unpublished data for paroxetine that have so far not been included in these analyses.
METHODS: The documentation for drug registration contained 16 studies in which paroxetine had been randomised against placebo. We registered the number of ...

Projected changes in significant wave height toward the end of the 21st century: Northeast Atlantic
[ PUBLICATION ]
Wind field ensembles from six CMIP5 models force wave model time slices of the northeast Atlantic over the last three decades of the 20th and the 21st centuries. The future wave climate is investigated by considering the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios. The CMIP5 model selection is based on their ability to reconstruct the present (1971–2000) extratropical cyclone activity, but increased spatial resolution has also been emphasized. In total, the study comprises 35 wave model ...

Modelling ocean wave climate with a Bayesian hierarchical space–time model and a log-transform of the data
[ PUBLICATION ]
Long-term trends in the ocean wave climate because of global warming are of major concern to many stakeholders within the maritime industries, and there is a need to take severe sea state conditions into account in design of marine structures and in marine operations. Various stochastic models of significant wave height are reported in the literature, but most are based on point measurements without exploiting the flexible framework of Bayesian hierarchical space–time models. This ...

A new approach to environmental contours for ocean engineering applications based on direct Monte Carlo simulations
[ PUBLICATION ]
The environmental contour concept is often applied in structural ship design in conjunction with the inverse first order reliability method (IFORM). It allows the great advantage of considering the environmental loads independently of the structural response of the ship. In this way, design sea states may be identified along the contour and time consuming response calculations are only needed for a limited set of design sea states. The traditional way of establishing such environmental ...

In the present paper the Natvig measures of component importance for repairable systems, and its extended version are analyzed for two three-component systems and a bridge system. The measures are also applied to an offshore oil and gas production system. According to the extended version of the Natvig measure a component is important if both by failing it strongly reduces the expected system uptime and by being repaired it strongly reduces the expected system downtime. The results ...

Rheumatoid arthritis patients have been treated with disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and the newer biologic drugs. We sought to compare and rank the biologics with respect to efficacy. We performed a literature search identifying 54 publications encompassing 9 biologics. We conducted a multiple treatment comparison regression analysis letting the number experiencing a 50% improvement on the ACR score be dependent upon dose level and disease duration for assessing the ...
