La piel es la capa de tejido exterior generalmente suave y flexible que cubre el cuerpo de un animal vertebrado, con tres funciones principales: protección, regulación y sensación. El tejido subcutáneo (del latín subcutáneo 'debajo de la piel'), también llamado hipodermis, hipodermo (del griego 'debajo de la piel'), subcutis, fascia superficial, es la capa más baja del sistema tegumentario en los vertebrados.
